Getting Started

Getting Started with Counseling

What it looks like to reach out, get matched, and show up for your first session.

How do I book my first session?

Call us or use the contact form on any Shadetree page. A real team member will respond, usually within one business day, with next steps and counselor options that fit your situation.

How soon can I be seen?

In most cases, we can schedule a first session within a week. If your need is more urgent, tell our team on the first call and we will do our best to accelerate the process.

Do I need to decide on a service before I call?

No. During the first call we help you figure out what kind of counseling fits best, whether that is individual, couples, family, or something else. Not knowing is a normal starting place.

Will I speak with a counselor on the first call?

Usually our intake team handles first calls and schedules you with the right counselor. If a clinical question comes up that needs a counselor's input, we loop them in.

What should I bring to my first session?

Just yourself. Completed intake paperwork (sent before your appointment) helps, but is not required. Comfortable clothes, water, and any questions you want answered.

What if I am in a crisis right now?

If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, please call 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or 911. Shadetree is not a crisis service. We want you to get the right help right away.

Services and Fit

Services and Fit

What services Shadetree offers and how to figure out which one fits your situation.

Who do you serve?

Couples, individuals, families, and teens. We offer marriage, premarital, couples, relationship, family, teen, grief, and individual counseling. In-person in Central Florida and online across the state.

What is the difference between couples and marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling is specifically for married couples. Couples counseling is available to any committed partnership, whether dating, engaged, or married. The techniques overlap significantly.

Do you treat severe mental illness or addiction?

Some conditions and active addictions need specialized care beyond our scope. Your first session includes a fit check. If another level of care would serve you better, we will help you find it.

Can I come if I am not in crisis?

Absolutely. Many of the healthiest clients we see come because they want to grow, not because something is broken. Proactive counseling prevents small concerns from becoming larger ones.

What if my spouse or family member does not want to come?

It is more common than you think. You can start with individual counseling to work on your own growth. Often, when one person begins to change, others become more open. We are also happy to answer their questions before the first session.

Can I bring another person, like a parent or friend?

Relationship counseling can be individual or joint with another important person in your life. Your counselor will help you decide what fits your goals.

Faith and Approach

Faith and Our Approach

How Christian faith shapes our work and how we care for clients from every background.

Is your counseling only for Christian clients?

Not at all. Our counselors integrate faith and biblical wisdom when clients want that, and we welcome everyone regardless of background or belief. Our goal is to serve you with compassion and clinical skill wherever you are in your journey.

Is Shadetree affiliated with a church or denomination?

No. Shadetree is an independent Christian counseling practice. Our counselors come from diverse Christian backgrounds. Shadetree is not governed by any particular church.

Will you pray with me or quote Scripture?

Only with your permission and when it fits what you want in session. Faith practices are offered as a resource, never imposed.

What if I am walking through doubt or deconstructing my faith?

You are welcome here. Doubt and questioning are part of many people's faith journeys. We make space for honest conversation without pressure or judgment.

What does "faith-integrated" actually mean in a session?

It means your counselor treats your faith as a resource for healing. Scripture, prayer, and Christian frameworks may be used when helpful and welcomed. It never means preaching, pushing beliefs, or skipping the clinical work.

What makes Shadetree different from secular counseling?

We integrate faith, clinical training, and temperament science in a way few practices do. We do not just manage symptoms. We help you understand the deeper patterns at work. And because we are Christ-centered, we believe real, lasting transformation is always possible.

Payment

Fees and Payment

Straight answers about the cost of care.

How much does a session cost?

Session rates vary based on counselor credentials and session length. For current rates, please contact our team directly. We will walk you through the specifics on your first call.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance. We do not use HSA or FSA. We do not offer superbills. Shadetree is a self-pay (cash-pay) practice.

What if I cannot afford your standard rate?

Please reach out anyway. We reserve a limited number of reduced-rate slots for clients facing significant financial hardship, and we can point you to trustworthy resources if Shadetree is not the right financial fit.

Sessions and Process

Sessions, Length, and Process

What sessions look like, how long counseling typically takes, and what to expect along the way.

How long are sessions?

Standard sessions run fifty minutes. Some couples and families request longer sessions when schedules permit. Your counselor will help decide what fits.

How often will we meet?

Most clients start weekly and taper to biweekly or monthly as progress builds. Your counselor will adjust the rhythm with you.

How long does counseling take?

Every person and situation is different. Some experience meaningful progress within 6-8 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support. The pace is always guided by your needs.

Can I switch between in-person and online sessions?

Yes. Many clients mix in-person and online based on their schedule. We keep it flexible.

What happens in the first session?

A safe space to share your story: your history, your struggles, and what you hope would be different. Your counselor listens carefully before building your plan.

How do I know counseling is working?

Your counselor will check in on goals regularly and invite you to notice shifts inside and outside sessions. Real progress is usually gradual and shows up in patterns, not single moments.

Online vs In-Person

Online and In-Person Care

How both options work at Shadetree and how to choose what fits you best.

Where are your offices located?

We have two offices in Ocala: 2603 SE 17th St., Unit C and 2215 E Ft King St, Suite C. We also serve The Villages, Gainesville, and anywhere else in Florida through secure online sessions.

Is online counseling really as effective as in-person?

Yes. Extensive research shows online counseling is just as effective as in-person for most concerns, and many clients find it more convenient, private, and sustainable.

What do I need for online sessions?

A private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. We send you a secure link before your first session.

Can I see you in person if I do not live in Ocala?

Yes. Many clients drive to our Ocala offices from The Villages, Gainesville, and across Central Florida. Others prefer the ease of online sessions, which work just as well.

How far do most clients travel?

Our in-person clients typically live within 45 minutes of Ocala. Beyond that, most choose online. Either is welcome.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

Yes, within availability. Evening appointments are common and we work to accommodate real schedules. Let us know what fits best for you.

Our Counselors

Our Counselors and Matching

How we match you with the right counselor and what kind of clinical training our team holds.

How do you match me with a counselor?

On your first call, we ask about what brings you in, your preferences, and your schedule. Our team matches you with a counselor whose clinical strengths and personality fit what you need.

Can I request a specific counselor?

Yes. If you have read our team bios and a specific counselor resonates, let our team know. We will check availability and confirm fit on the first call.

What if my counselor and I are not a good fit?

Counselor fit matters. If something feels off after a session or two, tell us. We will help you switch to another Shadetree counselor without penalty.

What clinical models do you use?

Common modalities include the Gottman Method for couples, SYMBIS for premarital, CBT and ACT for anxiety and mood, and developmental frameworks for teens. Your counselor uses what fits your situation.

Can you prescribe medication?

No. Our counselors cannot prescribe. If medication may be helpful, please consult a psychiatrist or primary care physician. We are glad to coordinate care with them as part of your plan.

Privacy and Logistics

Confidentiality, Records, and Logistics

How your information is protected and the practical details of working with Shadetree.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Counseling is private by design. We hold your information to strict professional and legal confidentiality standards. Exceptions are rare and legally required, and your counselor will explain them up front.

Do you share information with anyone else?

Only with your written permission or when required by law. Because Shadetree is a self-pay practice, your records are not shared with insurance carriers. We will discuss any sharing with you before it happens.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for twenty-four hours notice on cancellations when possible. Life happens and we work with you. Repeated short-notice cancellations do incur a fee.

Can a family member reach out on my behalf?

Spouses, parents, siblings, and friends can reach out with questions. The final decision to begin counseling rests with the person we will care for. We respect that line.

Can you help with legal matters like divorce or custody?

We can walk with you emotionally, but we cannot give legal advice or represent you in court. For legal matters, please consult a licensed attorney. We are glad to recommend attorneys if you need referrals.

What if I have a complaint or concern about my counselor?

Please bring it to us directly. You can contact the Shadetree office at any time. We take feedback seriously and want every client to feel respected and well cared for.

Still Have a Question?

If your question is not here, send it our way. A Shadetree team member will reply, usually within one business day.
